Case Study: Consulting on School Design
Formby High School has a national reputation for exceptional music, is renowned for its specialisms in performing arts and science and has recently been awarded Artsmark Gold (2012) for the fourth consecutive time. The school strives to provide an environment that is enjoyable, challenging and highly rewarding, as well as one which enables its students to achieve.
PLACED (a unique collaboration of built environment professionals) recently worked with Formby High School and Harrison Stringfellow Architects to deliver student workshops, the aim of which was to support the engagement and consultation of year 12 students in the design of a new 6th form common room.
Project/Client: Formby High School
Location: North West England, UK
Architect/Design Studio: Harrison Stringfellow Architects
Principal Use: 6th Form Common Room and School Canteen
Su Stringfellow, Director at Harrison Stringfellow Architects wanted to offer students at the school a genuine opportunity to influence the design solution of the new 6th common room and mixed-use general assembly and canteen hall. Harrison Stringfellow delivered two workshops, the second of which saw Amy Armitage of Form and a volunteer at PLACED and Benji Holroyd of SB Studio, engage with students on the live project. The students were able to consider the interior concepts that had been developed, with a particular focus on the branding process and specification of the furniture. This enabled the collaborative design team to gain invaluable insight as part of the consultation programme, looking at how the space would function and what they thought the key challenges for students using the space would be.
“Having scoured the standard education suppliers and being uninspired, we were delighted to be introduced to Form to help with our selection of furniture for Formby High School. They were able to source interesting appropriate lines, which met our brief and at a competitive price. Form worked hard to check the specification, provide samples and deliver on time. They understood what we were looking for as designers and were helpful and responsive. We will definitely look to collaborate again.” – Su Stringfellow, Director, Harrison Stringfellow Architects.
This project won a Gold in this years Roses Creative Awards in conjunction with Drum Magazine for Best Use of Illustration.
