Kai Chair
La Palma
Overview

Kai is a Japanese word that can be both interpreted and pronounced in many different ways, however its initial design started with paper. If you fold a piece of paper you get a crisp edge, and if you bend it you get a gentle, but tensioned curvature. The designer, Shin Azumi, was inspired to re-create the beauty of this in the design, resulting in the oppositional two elliptical lines recalling an opened seashell (seashell is “kai” in Japanese) The Kai chair is constructed with a curved plywood seat available in blanched oak or black lacquer and with a stainless steel frame.
